How to Install a Rear Trunk Spoiler (Clean & Secure)
A rear trunk spoiler is one of the easiest upgrades to transform a car’s look—but only if it’s installed correctly. The key is surface prep, alignment, and proper bonding time. This guide covers the typical installation process for most spoilers that mount using 3M VHB double-sided tape, and includes notes for spoilers that also use bolts/studs.
Note: Fitment and mounting methods vary by vehicle. If your spoiler requires drilling or you’re unsure, consider professional installation.
What You’ll Need
Tools & Materials
-
Clean microfiber towels
-
Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) 70%–99% or a paint-safe surface cleaner
-
Masking tape (for alignment marks)
-
Heat gun or hair dryer (recommended in colder weather)
-
3M Adhesion Promoter (highly recommended for strong bonding)
-
Disposable gloves (prevents skin oils from contaminating the surface)
Best Conditions
-
Ideal temperature: 20–30°C (68–86°F)
-
Avoid installing in rain or high humidity
-
Car must be clean and completely dry
Step 1: Clean and Prepare the Surface (Most Important Step)
-
Wash the trunk area where the spoiler will sit and dry it thoroughly.
-
Wipe the mounting area with IPA using a clean microfiber towel.
-
Repeat the wipe-down a second time.
Why this matters: wax, sealants, dust, and oils are the #1 cause of tape failure.
If the trunk has fresh wax or a ceramic coating in the mounting zone, the tape may not bond properly unless that area is properly stripped/cleaned.
Step 2: Test Fit (“Dry Fit”) and Mark Alignment
-
Place the spoiler on the trunk without removing the tape backing.
-
Center it using body lines and equal spacing on both sides.
-
Once positioned perfectly, create reference marks using masking tape:
-
One mark on the left edge
-
One mark on the right edge
-
Optional: one small mark at the center
These marks help you place the spoiler exactly the same way during final bonding.
Step 3: Prepare the Tape (3M VHB)
If your spoiler already has tape applied:
-
Press firmly along the tape to ensure it’s fully seated to the spoiler before mounting.
If you’re applying tape yourself:
-
Apply 3M VHB tape to the spoiler, press firmly, and wait 5–10 minutes before installation.
Optional but Recommended: Adhesion Promoter
Apply a thin layer of 3M Adhesion Promoter to the trunk only where the tape will contact. Let it flash off per the product instructions (usually a few minutes). This significantly improves bond strength, especially on cold days or difficult surfaces.
Step 4: Position the Spoiler Without Rushing
-
Peel back only a small section of tape backing (about 2–3 cm / 1 inch) at each end.
-
Fold those backing pieces outward to create pull tabs.
-
Place the spoiler on the trunk using your masking-tape alignment marks.
-
When it’s perfectly aligned, press lightly to “set” the position.
-
Slowly pull the backing tabs out while keeping the spoiler in place.
This method prevents misalignment and reduces the chance of the tape grabbing too early.
Step 5: Apply Proper Pressure (This Locks the Bond)
-
Press firmly along the entire spoiler for 60–120 seconds.
-
Use even pressure across the full length, especially at the edges.
Cold weather tip: gently warm the trunk surface and the spoiler/tape with a hair dryer or heat gun (low setting). Warm tape bonds much better.
Step 6: Allow Full Cure Time
-
Do not wash the car for 24–48 hours.
-
Avoid heavy rain and very high speeds in the first day if possible.
-
Full bond strength is typically reached after about 72 hours.
Final Check
After installation:
-
Inspect alignment from multiple angles (center, both sides, rear view).
-
Confirm both edges sit flush with no gaps.
-
If a corner lifts later, it’s usually due to insufficient cleaning, low temperature, or not enough pressure during install.
Maintenance Tips
-
Avoid aiming a pressure washer directly at the tape edges during the first week.
-
Don’t apply wax/greasy dressings along the tape seam early on.
-
Check the edges periodically during the first month.
