How to Install a Front Splitter/Lip(Step-by-Step Guide)

A front splitter is one of the most effective visual upgrades you can do—it sharpens the front end and gives the car a lower, wider look. The difference between a clean install and a bad one is simple: alignment, correct mounting points, and secure fastening.

This guide covers a reliable installation method for most aftermarket splitters, whether they mount with screws/bolts, OEM mounting points, or a combination with 3M VHB tape.

Note: Every bumper is different. Always test-fit first and follow your product-specific hardware layout.
What You’ll Need
Tools
Jack + jack stands or ramps
Wheel chocks
Drill + drill bits (if drilling is required)
Socket set / ratchet and/or screwdrivers
Torx bits (common on many EU cars)
Measuring tape + marker
Painter’s tape
Trim removal tool (optional)
Torque wrench (recommended)

Materials
Included hardware (screws/bolts/washers/brackets)
Optional: medium-strength threadlocker
Optional: 3M VHB tape + adhesion promoter (only if your splitter uses tape)
Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) + microfiber towels

Safety First
1. Park on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, and use wheel chocks.
2. Lift the front of the car with correct jacking points and secure it on jack stands (or use ramps).
3. Make sure you have enough space to work comfortably under the bumper.

Step 1: Test Fit and Set Alignment

1. Hold the splitter under the bumper and check:
Center alignment (splitter must be perfectly centered)
Side overhang is equal left/right
The splitter follows the bumper line without gaps
2. Use painter’s tape to mark reference points:
Center point on the bumper
Left/right edge positions

Tip: If possible, have a second person help hold the splitter while you align it.

Step 2: Clean the Contact Areas

Even if the splitter is mainly bolted, cleaning helps reduce movement and ensures tape (if used) bonds properly.
Clean the underside of the bumper where the splitter will sit using IPA.
If tape will be used:
Clean again.
Apply 3M adhesion promoter only where the tape will contact.

Step 3: Pre-Install the Hardware (Loose Fit First)

Depending on your kit, your splitter may use:
Existing OEM holes / factory screws
Screws into the bumper lip area
Brackets that tie into the undertray
Best practice:
1. Start by installing the center fasteners first (loosely).
2. Add fasteners moving outward toward both sides.
3. Keep everything loose until you confirm final alignment.

Loose fitting prevents the splitter from “locking” in the wrong position.

Step 4: If Drilling Is Required (Common on Many Splitters)

1. With the splitter aligned and held in place, mark drill points through the splitter holes.
2. Remove the splitter.
3. Drill pilot holes carefully (start small, then size up if needed).
4. Deburr lightly to keep the mounting surface flat.
Do not drill blindly. Confirm what’s behind the bumper (wiring, sensors, intercooler ducting, undertray). If you’re unsure, stop and check.

Step 5: Final Mounting and Tightening Order

Reposition the splitter and tighten in this order:
1. Center mounting points
2. Middle points on both sides
3. Outer corners last
This order keeps the splitter straight and avoids twisting.
Optional: Apply a small amount of medium threadlocker to bolts that may loosen over time.

Step 6: If Your Splitter Uses 3M Tape (Optional)

If tape is part of the install:
1. Peel a small section of tape liner at each end and create pull tabs.
2. Position the splitter perfectly using your tape marks.
3. Pull the liners out slowly while keeping the splitter pressed into position.
4. Press firmly along taped areas for 60–90 seconds.
Cure time: Avoid washing the car for 24–48 hours. Full bonding strength typically develops over ~72 hours.

Step 7: Ground Clearance and Final Check

Before driving:
Check splitter height and clearance on:
speed bumps
steep ramps
parking curbs
Confirm the splitter does not flex excessively.
Shake test: it should feel solid with no rattling.
After the first drive, do a quick re-check of all fasteners.

Aftercare & Maintenance Tips

Avoid pressure washing directly at the splitter edges in the first week.
Re-check fasteners after 7–14 days (normal for new installs).
If you scrape the splitter, inspect mounting points immediately—loosened hardware can lead to cracking.

FAQ

How long does installation take?
Typically 30–90 minutes, depending on whether drilling/brackets are involved.
Do I need professional installation?
If your kit requires drilling and you’re not comfortable, professional installation is recommended.

Will it hold at high speed?
A splitter is only as strong as its mounting. Use all hardware points provided and tighten correctly—especially at the center.
